The marriage covenant

Marriage is a covenant. (Malachi 2:14; Proverbs 2:16,17)

It is about a man and woman coming together and becoming one, not only physically, but inwardly growing together and knowing each other inside and out. (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31)

Because marriage partners are in a covenant relationship, they are one. (Genesis 2:23,24; Matthew 19:3-6) Jesus speaks of: "being for ever united." This speaks of the physical relationship.

  1. The physical relationship between Isaac and Rebekah brought "comfort and strength." (Genesis 24:67)
  2. The physical relationship in marriage should always be refreshing. (Proverbs 5:15-19)
  3. The marriage physical relationship was intended for pleasure, not just for having children. (Genesis 18:12)
  4. The wife should be just as happy with the physical relationship as the husband. (1 Corinthians 7:3)
  5. There should be no abnormal or perverted sex in the marriage. (Hebrews 13:4)
  6. Although becoming one flesh is immediate after marriage, the growing process of becoming one emotionally takes some time. It involves communication and spending time together.

Eve was given to Adam as a "help meet", which means "someone added to complete a whole". (Genesis 2:18) A husband and a wife make a complete picture of a home. Marriage partners complement each other; they do not compete with each other. One makes up for any lack in the other.

One last consideration is that God never provides a non-Christian spouse. (See 2 Corinthians 6:14.) However, if you were married before you were a Christian and your spouse has not yet believed, you should not send them away or leave them. (1 Corinthians 10:24)

Warning: if you were not walking with God in your relationship with God when you married your partner, that is no excuse to leave them. Repent and watch God turn the whole situation around.

Matthew 18:19 (Amplified Bible): "Again I tell you, if two of you on earth agree (harmonise together, make a symphony) about anything and everything, whatever they shall ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by my Father in Heaven."

God has given us the perfect agreement, although we don't always recognise it. Together, husbands and wives are to be in harmony, to be like a symphony. You cannot just agree about something with anybody. It must be someone you are close to, perhaps someone with whom you have a covenant. Who better then your husband or wife? Marriage is the most binding covenant there is after your covenant with your Heavenly Father.

A father gives his daughter away. Then the pattern begins. The covenant begins to take place.

Malachi 2:14,15 says  You cry out, “Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows. 15 Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his.[a] And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.
